Suffering from Adrenal fatigue or exhaustion can be a mixture of feeling lost, frightened and insecure of the unknown as you watch life pass you by. All your energy is channeled into doing the basics of life and just surviving. I understand how you can feel like you don’t have enough energy to do anything and not sure if anything can really help you anyway. I know this first hand because over the past 15 years I have suffered from severe adrenal fatigue. It has been such an intense and difficult journey to replenish my body after depleting it so badly. It took me so many years to heal as I was in a constant state of heightened stress with my son’s chronic illness which I write about in my first book “Gentle Steps on the Journey of a Healing Heart” and seemed like I was fighting an uphill battle but I could not stop so I just kept going. Anything was better than nothing.
Over that time it has become very clear that most women have some level of exhaustion. Which is no surprise with the fast pace world we live in and expectations that are impossible to achieve, yet we try every day to reach and compete to be the best Mother, wife, sister, daughter & friend, I too want to be all those things but I know without a doubt that I could not mentally or physically achieve those goals when I was too exhausted to move. It was very clear very fast that to be the best we had to start with me taking care of me. I was desperate and so scared I would never have my life back and that I would have to live the rest of my life as a shell of who I inspired to be. Now that I have taken the time to replenish and fill up all my vitality, connection & contributions buckets I offer so much more to those around me and it shows in all my relationships and my life. My journey has been filled with so many emotions but every day I start with gratitude that I not only found my way back to live the life I inspired to live but also that I have created a life that extends beyond anything I could have dreamed when I started this journey. Often my Husband and I discuss how grateful we are that I found a way to help myself to live again, as we don’t even want to imagine what life would have been like if I gave up and did not try and try some more. My daughter always says to me mom you are always learning as she is so right, I am always learning and expanding and it shows in every level of my life. I can now be the best me, the best mom, wife, daughter & friend and it feels very good.
I understand how hard this journey is and how when you are at a low point you are not sure if you can do it, or even where to begin. I know how scary and desperate it can feel to feel your energy slip away, to feel hopeless and lost…I also know how good it feels to find a way and it all happens one baby step at a time. I encourage you to make yourself count and you will find out just how rich and beautiful your life and relationships will be! If you want to win, start with you. You can do this!
My personal mission is to share all of the things I have found to help me on my journey with every single person who is looking for support in this area. I know how it feels to be on this journey and I have spent the last 15-year exploring ways to help support my body back to life.
Now I get to wake up with the energy I have never even imagined I would have and enjoy a fulfilled and rich life, and I want that for every person who has the courage to make themselves matter. So I want to begin with the one thing I wish I knew at the start of this journey…
#1 – Restorative yoga.
When most people think of yoga they think of warrior poses and stretching however when it comes to restorative yoga that is not the right track. The aim of restorative yoga is to create rest and ease within your body, which for many people they carry more stress within the body then they are even aware of. The Restorative yoga postures gently open us to encourage greater energy flow but this can best be achieved by sending a message of comfort, safety to the body. When every joint is supported, the body receives this as a message of kindness and responds, ahh…I am safe to soften, safe to relax. This is the support the bodies suffering from Adrenal fatigue and exhaustion need the most.
Restorative yoga is all about deep relaxation and to engage the parasympathetic nervous system which controls the relaxation response in our body. The relaxation response returns the body’s resources toward the digestive system which is a big deal since our gut causes a lot of issues in our body, but also the brain balance needed to maintain healthy brain wave. Once our fight and flight response returns under control, the true power of our brains become accessible. When we are stressed or exhausted it is our bodies way of telling us we are taxing our adrenals and need to restore the energy, restorative yoga is an amazing way to restore the bodies depleted resources. Sleep alone, won’t help a tired & depleted soul.
Restorative yoga works like this. we go through the body to shed stress in our bodily tissue by placing the body in different passive poses, moving the spine in all directions, one pose at a time by propping oneself up with blankets, pillows, blocks, and bolsters in order to simulate the state where we feel weightless, comfortable and supported.
By completely supporting the body and being still for extended periods, the breath, mind, and the nervous system begins to calm, When calm, our breath starts to break up into pauses, inhalation pause, and exhalation pauses. Then the mind starts to slow down and after minutes in floating state, the body goes limp since the poses have helped us to dissolve accumulated tension and stress around the joints. That will result in the tissues being less contracted and will fire off a signal via the nerves through the spinal cord to our brain that there is no danger and no need for stress hormones being injected into our being. The brain then responds by reducing stress hormones, even more, enhancing hormones of opposite characters to lower the contraction in the arteries and veins so the blood can flow faster and more freely. Deep tension embedded in our tissues can start to dissolve and our system begin’s to replenish. Then the mind quiets and we experience less mind chatter. All is an absolutely amazing experience for a tired and exhausted body.
The mind can instead be used in a different way. The eyes and ears can be internal vision and hearing, picking up the signals from the vibration of the systems in our bodies working better together. We can then start to see what we can do with what we have, & our bodies ability to help us heal when supported.
I pick this as #1 because it restores & supports your body unlike anything else. It is the fuelling station, it is an amazing support for the body’s healing process, it’s affordable and you can do it from the comfort of your own home with amazing support!
I LOVE RESTORATIVE YOGA!! That is not a big surprise since I teach it and do it every day in my own life. I love to shout it from the roof tops since I truly think we could all use a session of restorative yoga to let go & connect to our soul.
